SFI Announces REQUESTS FOR PROPOSALS for Conservation Partnerships

WASHINGTON –The independent Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) forest certification program is inviting applications for its highly successful Conservation and Community Partnerships Grants program, which is now in its third year and continues to support research and outreach on responsible forestry.

Forest Certification Pilot Achieves Success in Maine 1.4 Million Acres/570,000 Hectares Certified to SFI Standard

WASHINGTON – An innovative pilot project involving Time Inc., Hearst Enterprises, National Geographic Society, Verso Paper Corp. and Sappi Fine Paper North America has led to 790,000 acres/320,000 hectares of additional forest lands being certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) Standard in Maine.

Maine Executive Order Puts Forest Certification on Equal Footing

WASHINGTON, DC – Maine Governor Paul LePage signed an executive order today directing that "any new or expanded state buildings shall incorporate 'Green Building' standards that give certification credits equally to forest products grown, manufactured, and certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Standard, Forest Stewardship Council, American Tree Farm System, and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification systems."

SFI Grant Supports Manual to Assist American Chestnut Restoration

ASHEVILLE, NC – The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) has released an easy-to-read best management practices manual for all landowners, including orchard managers, professional growers, forest landowners, or amateur enthusiasts, so they can help restore American chestnut trees. The manual is an easy-to-read guide that outlines best practices for planting and raising chestnut trees, including site preparation, fertilization, deer and pest management, identifying and treating diseases, and more. The goal of the guide is to help planters of all types significantly improve the success rate of their chestnut plantings.

White House Easter Egg Features SFI Packaging for Third Consecutive Year

WASHINGTON — The gift box for the White House Easter Egg has been made from Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) chain of custody certified paperboard. This is the third consecutive year that SFI products have been used for the White House Easter Egg gift box. The National Park Foundation sells the souvenir egg to benefit the White House Easter Egg Roll. The souvenir eggs are sold online at easter.nationalparks.org or at the White House Historical Association stores in Washington, D.C.

Global Pressure Mounts for US Green Building Council to Accept Multiple Forest Certification Programs

Forest certification standards from twelve nations have called on the USGBC to end its discrimination against wood and accept all credible sustainable forest certification standards. The certification programs pointed out that wood is one of the best environmental choices for construction the best environmental choices for construction, as long as it is from a responsible source — and that fibre certified to the 26 national forest certification programs recognized by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) meets this demand.

Pressure Mounts on USGBC to Open LEED to SFI, Other Credible Standards

WASHINGTON — In a letter steered by Congressmen Kurt Schrader (D-OR) and Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) to the U.S. Green Building Council, 79 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing 35 different states, have urged the organization to "accept all credible forest certification systems for qualification under the LEED rating system" including the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. On the heels of the letter from this bipartisan group of Members of Congress, USGBC today received a petition with nearly 6,000 signatories calling for LEED recognition of all "wood and paper products certified to independent, respected and credible standards including SFI, ATFS, CSA, FSC, and PEFC." In addition, six members of Congress have sent their own letters urging an inclusive LEED policy.

Thousands Demand Change to the U.S. Green Building Council's Green Building Rating System

WASHINGTON — An online petition demanding changes to the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building standard is receiving tremendous support. Since launching on March 16, 2010, the petition has more than 5,000 signatures from across the globe. The petition calls on the USGBC to open LEED to all "wood and paper products certified to independent, respected and credible standards including SFI, ATFS, CSA, FSC, and PEFC." Currently LEED only recognizes certified products from one standard. The petition was launched by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative®.

Arlington, VA January 15, 2008 — The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) program recorded substantial growth in 2007, including a 750 per cent increase in locations with SFI chain-of-custody certification that can track products from certified forests.
