The U.S. Green Building Council is revising their forest certification credit in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. Today LEED only gives credit for wood and paper products certified to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standard. Forestry experts, government officials, conservationists and many others are urging USGBC to open LEED to SFI and other credible standards in order to promote responsible forestry in North America. More than three quarters of North American certified forests are certified to SFI, ATFS or CSA, while FSC-certified forests account for less than one quarter. LEED’s FSC-only recognition means building professionals seeking LEED certification may have to purchase wood products from overseas. The time has come for USGBC to open LEED to all credible forest certification standards.
